The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is a medical school located at Pondicherry, the Union Territory in India.
JIPMER is an Institute of National Importance (INI) and a tertiary care referral hospital that is under the direct administrative control of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India with the autonomy to run its internal administration.
JIPMER , spread over a campus of 195 acres (0.79 km2), has over 300 faculty members, over 700 resident physicians and over 3,000 nursing, administrative and support staff.
Every year, it admits 150 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate students.
The year 2019-20 saw over 24,00,000 outpatient visits, 350,000 inpatient admissions, and 70,000 surgeries performed at JIPMER.
The institute is headed by the Director, who is the chief executive charged with the overall responsibility of running the institute and its hospital. The Medical Superintendent helps the Director coordinate all the hospital functions pertaining to patient care. Dean (Academic) is charged with overseeing and coordinating all the academic activities of the institute including teaching, whereas Dean (Research) looks after all the research-related activities.
After the enactment of NMC Act 2019 in September 2019, NEET-UG became common for all India entrance test for admissions to medical colleges in India including the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) which until then conducted separate entrances.
Candidates to the courses offered at JIPMER are selected based on All-India entrance examinations. Entrance examinations are held once a year for undergraduate seats and twice a year for post-graduate seats.
JIPMER offers a variety of courses. Undergraduate courses include MBBS, BSc (Medical Laboratory Technology), BSc ( Allied Medical Sciences- Cardiac Lab Technology/Dialysis/Neuro/OT), BMRSc (Bachelor of Medical Record Science). BSc (Nursing) was started in 2006.
Postgraduate courses include MD, MS, and diploma in many specialties, MSc in Nursing, Medical Biochemistry and Medical Physiology and PhD in several subjects.
Super-specialty courses include MCh in cardiothoracic surgery, urology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, gastro intestinal surgery and DM in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Neonatology, Clinical pharmacology and Immunology.
In January 2014 JIPMER started masters in public health courses. Emergency Medical Technician course MRO and MRT.
